OFC Creations Wraps up Season 2018-19 at the Lyric Theatre, Announces 2019-2020 Season
OFC Creations’ first season at The Lyric Theatre a success
In April 2019, the regional premiere of The Golden Girls Musical sold out nine performances, and when the curtain falls on The Bodyguard the Musical on May 12, it will signal the wrap of OFC Creations’ debut season at the Lyric Theatre.
“People like the location and the feel of being here. When the Lyric opportunity presented itself, we jumped in full-force.”
–Eric Vaughn Johnson, executive director of OFC Creations
OFC Creations—a history of community collaboration and arts leadership
While The Lyric Theatre is a new venue for OFC Creations, the organization itself is entering its 15th year. OFC stands for Opportunities for Creativity and was founded in 2005 by Vaughn Johnson with a group of neighborhood friends while students at Pittsford Mendon High School.
“The focus was for us to explore and create art without the boundaries of school or adults hovering over us,” said Vaughn Johnson, who is also the president of the Greece Performing Arts Society.
Over the past 14 years, OFC Creations has collaborated with many organizations, including Nazareth College, Spotlight Theatre, the Rochester Museum and Science Center, Rochester Latino Theatre Company and the Rochester Association for Performing Arts.
Vaughn Johnson was the business manager and program director of RAPA for six years before turning his attention to OFC Creations full-time last year. OFC Creations moved its residency to the Lyric in September 2018 and most of the staff, actors and crew from RAPA followed.
“This is really a new leaf turned over. Over the years Eric has built a really great team of people and 99% of them are with him at OFC Creations now. He has organizational skills that blow me away and he thinks outside the box.”
–Judith Ranaletta, Director of ROC City Singers
Ranaletta, a former vocal music and drama teacher at Greece Athena High School whose students have performed in 39 Broadway shows, met Vaughn Johnson in 2012. She’s active with OFC Creations as the Arts Program Director of the Century Club, another stunning, East Avenue venue the theatre company utilizes.
In March 2019, Ranaletta directed an innovative and interactive production of The Sound of Music at the Century Club, where audience members moved from room to room in the mansion alongside the actors. The intimate, European-inspired show sold out all six performances and was so well received that OFC Productions has added two similar shows to its 2019-2020 schedule (Nunsense in November and The King and I in March).
“The thing that really distinguishes OFC Creations from every other theatre company in this city, is that they’re a theatre company for all people and all ages throughout the year. I’m thrilled to be working with Eric here. He’s done a really great job bringing creative and visionary theater experiences to Rochester.”
The 2019-20 season at The Lyric Theatre
The exciting new lineup for Season 2019-20 includes two world premieres, two world famous drag queens, and opportunities for kids and teens to take the stage.
This season, award-winning playwright Charlie Harrington returns to OFC Creations to write two original shows world premiers at the Lyric Theatre: October’s Bibbidi Bobbidi Cinderella and in December, Wrapping Around the Christmas Tree: The Musical.
Also in showing December, In the Heights is an exciting opportunity for kids and teens to perform on stage. A vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood is on the brink of change—full of hopes, dreams, and pressures.
Two world famous drag queens will be paying visits this year: International superstar, Miss Coco Peru will tell her favorite stories, songs and gossip on September 27, and in January, Dixie’s Tupperware Party will bring grandma’s Tupperware party out of the living room and into the 21st century. This southern tale of empowerment will leave hearts a little bigger and food a little fresher.
