Holding On through Song: A Celebration of the African-American Spiritual
First Inversion offers a unique experience combining improvisation with new and existing arrangements of African-American spirituals for various configurations of choir, soloists, instrumentalists, and audience members. The singers of First Inversion are joined by Kearstin Piper-Brown, Jason Holmes, Alan Jones, and other well-known Rochester musicians. Words from the mouths of former slaves, including Rochester’s own Frederick Douglass, will provide historical context and enrich the audience’s journey with this powerful music. Audience participation during the performance is encouraged!
